1. Where you are from?

I am originally from Rochester, NY but frequented the city a lot while growing up, and have been here for 12 years.

Chelsea B lingerie2. What you are into… studies, hobbies, special skills etc..?

I am a professional dancer – Performing in the immersive show, ‘ Sleep No More’ for about 4 years. I also work with my collaborative dance partner Adam Barruch, traveling nationally/ internationally performing, creating films and assisting him set works on companies. I recently did a site specific dance film with Sarah Elgart of Arrogant Elbow that was outfitted by Issey Miyake and was accepted into the Cannes Film Festival. Currently I am working on presenting my first ever solo show to premiere in June.
In addition to this, I’m an active AIDS activist, volunteering for God’s Love We Deliver, Dancers Responding to AIDS, and am starting an education in post conflict transformation work – using movement to promote healing with legend dance Margie Gillis.
So, in a nutshell I’m a dancer / performance artist, activist, feminist, coffee addict, Hitchcock blonde, who loves the ocean 😉

3. Favorite clients from the biz?

By favorite clients by far are MM LAFLEUR- working with them is to watch brilliant artists and minds at work. They are a strong, supportive group of creatives, who enjoy what they do and have a strong energy that makes it beyond enjoyable to be around. I am also astounded to watch them create, fix, tweak, and improve.

4. Dreams/goals any thing else of interest (any other dream clients?)Mp2E9PCxOV9b7mfFzf8C7krHAb5pDZyNRoux5jFJEiQ.jpeg

I have dreams of owning a juice stand on the beach someday… and between now and then I am committed to living a present and honest life of art and adventure.

5. What are some of your career highlights?

I’ve been very blessed in my career, and it’s not over yet 😉
Some highlights over the past few years would be: when I spent time in Japan shooting 2 dance films- it was an epic and once in a lifetime experience…. being asked to be part of the Margie Gillis Legacy Project… Joining Sleep No More (after auditioning 3 times!), spending residency at The Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbra with Adam Barruch , and working with Pavel Zustiak and Gabrielle Lamb on LUNA ( my solo show).
Not to mention the brilliant artists and humans I have met!
6. How did you get into modeling or acting?
I used to model when I was little- mainly for Kodak- but when I was 9 I decided to go to a ballet training school, and that became my life’s goal. Any expression of art keeps my interest and I continued to stay involved with as many areas of the art world as possible, including my modeling. In a weird way, fit modeling reaffirms for me that I am enough- something we as artists forget sometimes. I value the team that has my back, to remind me of that when I lose my way.

TALENT SPOTLIGHT: GILLIAN TODD

We’re so excited to feature Bicoastal MGMT model/talent, Gillian Todd, on our blog this month! We’ve loved having her over the years and watching her talents grow and spread into different paths like developing and producing film, starting her own company (theBlox), and more! Continue reading to learn more about Gillian…
GILLIAN_TODD_250.jpg
How long have you been with Bicoastal as a fit model, print model and actor?
I  am very happy to say I’ve been a part of the Bicoastal family for going on 6 years.
Tell us about your background?
I’m originally from Montana, where I studied acting & modern dance, before coming to New York to pursue a career in acting. I had a multitude of supplemental jobs when I first moved here- everything from teaching pre-school, to working events to running my own private chef business. I have always been creative and entrepreneurial and I think that’s one of the reasons I connected with Marco, my business partner and new fiancé! His background is in writing, directing, producing, but business as well. We actually started working together and creating more quickly than we developed our romantic relationship and that’s when I got more involved in producing, in addition to acting.
GILLIAN_0540 2.jpgHow did theBlox come about?
I joined Marco in the Bronx about 5 years ago, shortly after we began our  company, Round Seven, where we develop and produce film, TV and branded content. While we were working on a Bronx-based documentary, we started to see that our Borough is portrayed very negatively in the media and on Google. Being marketing and social media savvy, we joked that we should use our skills as content creators to blow up the internet with positive SEOs about the Bronx. The notion became a more serious conversation when we started to see our area changing. We decided now was the perfect time to use content to protect and elevate the identity of the Bronx. Here at theBLOX, we like to say: Brooklyn has Vice, Manhattan has everything, the Bronx needs theBLOX.
What, in a nutshell, is it?
TheBLOX is the only new-media platform in the Bronx. It is made up of a community of media professionals, committed to amplifying and Bronx-centric, entertaining content that celebrates culture and diversity. Stylistically, think Buzzfeed, Complex, Vice, Vox…
Where and how can people watch?
Our website is www.theblox.tv and we are on all social media platforms @thebloxtv. Please subscribe to our YouTube channel to get the latest videos!GILLIAN_TODD_381.jpg
Do you have any favorite episodes?
It’s hard to pick my favorite segments, because there really is something for everyone. Of course I have to shamelessly self promote my sports segment! Check out my recent videos highlighting NYCFC and Yankees. I am very excited about and think the Bicoastal family will appreciate a couple style-based segments we have coming up. One is with Men’s Style Blogger Dandy in the Bronx and the other with Designer and Influencer Jerome LaMaar, called Stylin’ Out.
What’s your future vision?
My vision for theBLOX is to continue to create opportunities for young, talented creators in the Bronx and to produce content that will be consumed by everyone. I really think we are on the path to compete with the new-media big boys… not naming names 😉

1. Where you are from?

I’m from a small town in Iowa called Newton, went to college in the Chicago area, and graduate Greg#72.jpgschool in Kansas City. Currently living in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and loving it!

2. What you are into… studies, hobbies, special skills etc..?

Hobbies include reading, biking, theatre, and poker. I’m a warm-weather lover, so if I can be outside in a park or on the beach I’m having a good day.

3. Favorite clients from the biz?

Love working with Arctix Bottoms. Everyone that I’ve meet there, from photographers to designers to factory workers to management is so friendly and hard-working. There’s always a fun vibe in the room with them. Plus I’ve had the privilege of doing both ecomm and fit with them, and I’ve learned so much working in different facets of the process.

4. Dreams/goals any thing else of interest (any other dream clients?)?

I’d really like to work with Tahari, I had a go see there when I first started working with Bicoastal that went really well, and I just loved the energy of the place.
Gregbw1#432.jpgI’d love to expand my fit client database in 2017; the more I do it, the more I enjoy it!
Print work also holds a fascination for me, I think I’ve got a unique look and wouldn’t mind holding a glass of whiskey in a magazine someday. 🙂

5. Career highlights?

My primary work is in theatre and film, so acting with Toni Collette in the tv show Hostages has got to be a lifetime favorite. Other favorite roles include Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatcher, Leontes in A Winter’s Tale, and an upcoming role on the Starz network show Power!

6. How did you get into modeling or acting?

I’ve been acting and in front of audiences my whole life. Started in church and community theatre as a kid and just never stopped through high school and college and grad school and now professionally. I think the only way you can fail is to quit. And now because I didn’t quit, I’m working with amazing people modeling and acting. It’s what I love to do and I don’t intend to stop. Onwards and upwards.

1. Where you are from?

I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. I moved to NYC to attend college, and currently reside in Brooklyn.

2. What you are into… studies, hobbies, special skills etc..?

A great interest of mine is foreign language study. I previously worked as a certified Spanish Teacher and I have some proficiency in Italian and German.

Another area that I am currently developing is Commercial Voiceover. I am taking another round of Voiceover classes at Actor’s Connection with Paul Liberti, and plan to begin seeking work in that field as well.

Speaking of fashion, I have loved it since childhood! Matter of fact, I used to be late to school because I was changing my outfit so many times. It’s funny that I’m making a living now doing just that. I am also a self-taught makeup artist, proficient in beauty makeup and face & body painting.

3. Favorite clients from the biz?

They are all my favorites! I’ve loved fitting for Eloquii, Kohls, and Oceanfront swimwear with Trimera Brands! All have been such a pleasure to work with. Additionally, I recently enjoyed shooting e-comm for Change Fashions-so much fun!

4. Dreams/goals any thing else of interest (any other dream clients?)?

I would love to be a part of more print campaigns, especially mainstream companies invested in showcasing diversity like Gap, Slink Jeans, Target . . . and many others. I also need Nubian Skin the London-based lingerie company to get in touch with me so I can show off these curvy legs for their plus size line! I love that they specialize in undergarments and hosiery for the many brown shades of people.

Expanding my fit client list is also something I’m really looking to do in 2017! I’ve really enjoyed being apart of the process and seeing companies like Eloquii grow while I’ve been their fit model.

C01A7198 -FLIP.jpg

5. Career highlights?

I have been actively modeling for the past 6 years. The top highlights include being a part of BET Experience in Los Angeles with Goo Goo Atkins, being selected as the Face of ‘Fro Fashion Week-Atlanta in 2013, and definitely traveling to different factories internationally (China) multiple times with Eloquii for fit work!

6. How did you get into modeling or acting?

I used to frequent a website plusmodels.com which provided good information for people starting out. I networked and submitted myself to different projects and tested with photographers. Then, when I was seeking agency representation I just sent in my measurements and snapshots of myself in jeans/tank top to several agencies. I was called into four agencies, that’s when Bicoastal signed me!

Model of the Month-Leah Heifferon!

We are thrilled to have pro fit model, Leah H, as our November Model of the Month!  From being one of our very first signs, to now being one of our top models, we are so happy to see how much she’s taken off and we’re so excited to see what future brings her! Read more to learn a bit about her story, and her “stroke of luck” for stumbling across the fit industry-talk about genetic lottery!

1. Where you are from?
I’m from Tucson, Arizona. A cruel place to raise such a pale person!

2. What you are into… studies, hobbies, special skills etc..?
I’m a big reader, having worked for many years in publishing before transitioning to fit lisahoulgrave_photography_0312_rtfmodeling full time. I’m also an avid cook, am obsessed with spin class, and love meeting up with friends all over my favorite borough, Brooklyn!

3. Favorite clients from the biz?
Ralph Lauren Collection is just as classy as you’d imagine, and Rag & Bone is just as cool. I’ve worked for Diane Von Furstenberg for over five years, so their fit room really feels like my home away from home. Another favorite client where I log a ton of hours is Tory Burch. Coincidentally, Diane Von Furstenberg and Tory Burch are the only two fashion designers on the Forbes list of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. I’m honored to work for such inspiring women!

4. Dreams/goals any thing else of interest?
I’m planning to take patternmaking classes at FIT this January just to nerd out a bit with my job. The best fit models are able to visualize the changes techs are making to the pattern as they’re fitting, and I want to go deeper into my understanding of their work so that I can be even more valuable to my clients.leah-retouched-hand

5. Career highlights?
I love getting to travel with clients: to Milan with Ralph Lauren and Hong Kong with DVF. What’s dreamier than that?

6. How did you get into modeling or acting?
I was looking for a way to supplement my publishing income when a friend recommend I try fit modeling. I’d never heard of a fit model, but went to an open call at an agency where they told me I have the perfect measurements and offered me a contract. It was an incredible stroke of luck!

Spotlight on Mompreneur: Malissa Young

MalissaHead.jpg

Bicoastal MGMT founder and CEO, Malissa Young, was interviewed for a “Spotlight on Mompreneur” on kristenmarieperez.com. Here she talks about her business ventures, work/life balance, and the fun story behind the creating of Bicoastal! Malissa is loved by her models, employees and many in the industry-and for great reason! Read below to learn more…

screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-9-52-27-am1. How many kids do you have?
I have three! Ages are 11, 6 and 5…they keep me super busy outside of work-but it is worth it ; )

2. What service or product do you offer?
I represent models and actors. We offer our talent castings and auditions for everything from fit modeling (that is the body behind the creation of garments-clients include high end designers like Alexander Wang and mass market brands like Macys) to commercials and even sometimes fun projects like finding the next Kids Bop kids tour singer and dancer!

3. How did you get your idea or concept for your business?
I worked as a fit model (sort of fell into it) since I was a new college grad who modeled here and there for extra money during college. My first account was Tommy Hilfiger. After that was on my resume, my client list grew to include some really exciting and fun clients like Marc Jacobs that I traveled around the globe with to factories to help perfect their fit. When I was pregnant with my second child I started measuring people to find my clients a replacement. Then referrals started happening very organically, and my very first bookings were with plus and petite models. After a couple of years of building up a fit client base, I had all of these people who were not great for fit, but great for runway, commercial, showroom… so we expanded our reach! Things continue to snowball-every day is still exciting for me!

IMG_7417.jpg4. Were you always an entrepreneur?
Yes-somewhat… I left college with an idea to start a Women Owned Business Guide (basically a yellow pages of women owned businesses so we could support each other). That didn’t really get off the ground… next I joined a children’s sneaker start up-and ran sales. Three years later we were not profiting to the extent we wanted to be and it was time to move on. I was also running my own business to a degree as an independent contractor/fit model for many brands. After my first child, I created a yoga dvd (I am also a yoga teacher) called Toning With Tots and Toddlers -link here- which I hoped could spiral into other things but it really didn’t. Finally, I started Bicoastal Mgmt! So, technically this is my 4th business venture.

5. Whats your mission?
My mission, in general, is to have fun, be happy, be honorable and have balance between work, family and maybe myself if I can squeeze it in.

6. How do you find inspiration?
Inspiration comes somewhat naturally. I love seeing things grow. I love helping people achieve their goals or dreams. I want to make people happy-so connecting people as a line of work is pretty natural. When I feel in a rut I think it is a sign to mix up the routine. Take a break. Do something different. As a boss, I hope I can also be open to my employees and what they need to work to their best ability, because everyone may feel this way! As an owner, you are privileged to make your own schedule. But part of managing a growing business is making sure your team also feels inspired.

10636670_10153408855742842_8845173203843579915_o.jpg7. What do you love best about being a mompreneur?
I love having the flexibility to deal with all of the things that come up for my and most families-and I greatly respect moms who have to juggle it all and a job where they are not as in control of their schedule. It is nice to know I can juggle things to make the many things that come up during business hours from Family Fridays to Doctor’s appointments.

8. Biggest challenge you face as an entrepreneur?
Biggest challenge is probably not throwing in the towel to live in the woods and do yoga and garden and cook and become class mom ; ). City momprenuer live is exhausting!

9. How do you use social media?
Personally, I use my Facebook to see what friends are up to and share family photos and some business news and castings. Professionally we use Instagram (@BICOASTALMGMT) and our Bicoastal Mgmt Facebook to post cool pictures, inspirations, and castings (Family castings come up all the time so check it out!)!

10. If you had just one piece of advice to a mom just starting out, what would it be?
Hard work and just taking one step at a time helped me be successful thus far and finding great people to work with, always being grateful, and staying positive. For moms looking to start a business, if you look too far ahead it can be overwhelming to reach your goals. Just take the initial step and keep working toward your goals. If it is meant to be, things will fall into place.

Model of the Month-Katie Ward Mason!

Check out our Model of the Month and fit model superstar, Katie Ward Mason! Not only have millions of garments been based off of her body, but she is a super athlete on top of being a mom-read a bit here about how she juggles it all!

Where you are from?

I grew up in a very small town on the Jersey Shore called Spring Lake.  After HS I moved to Manhattan and received a bachelors in Business focussing in Fashion Merchandising/Marketing from Parsons School of Design.  In my first year at Parson’s, the entire freshman class took foundations which exposed me to Life Drawing, Pattern Making and many more things beyond the business side.  Who knew how handy pattern making would come into play in my career!
IMG_6260.JPGWhat you are into… studies, hobbies, special skills etc..?

I’m from an active family. While attending Parson’s, I didn’t get that athletic college experience.  Pretty soon afterward graduating , I got into the sport of triathlon and never looked back.  While at a tri-camp I had the opportunity to try Nordic Skiing. My husband and I now chase snow on weekends and vacations to enjoy some “fresh corduroy”.  We are also avid SUPers and body surfers.  Our passion to live an active lifestyle has taken us around the world from Brazil, Kona to the waves on the Portugal coast.  This helps keep up with my Portuguese and French!
Favorite clients from the biz?

I’ve had some absolutely wonderful and diverse clients in the fit world.  From junior accounts like Delia’s and and Target, to contemporary at Theory and couture with Narciso Rodriguez, Kaufman Franco and Donna Karan. This experience has taken me to China, HK, Vietnam, Italy, Jakarta, Dominican Republic, as well as some awesome domestic factories.
Dreams/goals any thing else of interest (any other dream clients?)?

As I continue on this awesome journey fitting, my goal is to fully incorporate my diverse skill set into an Innovations position in the athletic apparel world. With my degree, my knowledge of fit, fabric, construction, to the high uncompromising standards I hold for all gear I test.  Whether racing in the Hawaii heat,  -10 degrees in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks or in downward dog there is no excuse to not be dry, comfortable as well as being on trend and looking good.

Displaying FullSizeRender.jpg

Katie winning her first race after having her baby, Lucy. She was the first place woman and 10th overall.

How did you get into modeling or acting?

After Parson’s I went on to open a business.  I was young, overwhelmed and knew it was to much to soon; I was looking for a change.  One of my regular clients turned out to be the Creative Director at Theory.  She asked me to come up and try some things on. I had fit during my days at Parson’s for free clothes and never thought of making it my career.  I made comments on the samples and she had my measurements taken.  I stared fitting the next day!img_6261

Alexandra Ferrara-Fstop’s “Rising Star”!

_PF_7672-Edit.jpg

We are so excited to share this awesome interview of one of our commercial, legit, fit, and plus print talent-Alexandra F. She was featured on fstop.fm‘s blog as their “Rising Star”, and we couldn’t agree more! Continue reading to see our personal favorite parts of the interview…click here to read the full post!

Upon graduating with her BFA in Musical Theatre, Alexandra moved to the Big Apple in pursuit of her dreams. Whether she’s on stage or in front of the camera, she commands a strong presence through her talent, vivacity, and charm. Check her out below.

_10A4762 copy.jpgWhat was the moment you decided to get into modeling?

When I moved to New York, I started noticing healthy, curvy, size 8-10 models like Myla Dalbesio in ads and magazines, and it really excited me. I definitely struggled with my body image growing up (as most girls do), and maybe if there had been move curvy models around when I was younger, I would have felt differently!

What was your most embarrassing situation while modeling?

I have SO many it’s hard to choose! You HAVE to be able to laugh at yourself in this business because some of the situations you find yourself in are completely absurd. Here are some highlights from just the past few weeks…I went to a casting for a music video where they turned on some music and told me to just dance as if I were at a club while they taped it (there is now video somewhere of my solo dance performance to “Ghetto Superstar”). Once, I had an entire casting where they had to shoot JUST my butt wearing different outfits and walking around. And most recently, I found myself being measured in my underwear in a room full of people, while the Hamilton soundtrack played in the background.

Modeling is very competitive.  How do you stand out?

I’m always early, prepared, and show up with a good attitude. Whether or not I’m the best for the job, if someone works with me once, they are very likely to want to work with me again.alexandria-ferrara-812

What’s been the most challenging part of modeling, and how did you overcome those challenges?

The most challenging part is fighting the urge to compare yourself to other people. Every time I walk into a casting, every SINGLE girl is drop dead gorgeous and probably just finished working on an incredible job. I have to block all of that out and remember that casting decisions at the end of the day are about hair color and measurements. They aren’t personal.

_10A5258 copy.jpg

What is the best thing a photographer can do to bring out your personality?

Play great music!

What was your most memorable photoshoot?

I was shooting swimwear in the summer just to add to my portfolio, and it was about 101 degrees. I do NOT hold up well in the heat! I was a total mess. My makeup was dripping off – I felt faint. It was terrible. The makeup artist was an angel and found a frozen pack of peas to stick down the back of my suit in an attempt to cool me down. So there I was, trying to look sexy in a swimsuit with sweat and pea juice dripping down my back. The whole thing was just so comical!

What do you like most about modeling?

It opened up an entirely new creative network for me. I jump at any chance to create something new.

_MG_1762 1.jpg

alexandria ferrara 387.jpgWhat are the top 3 tips you have for aspiring models?

  1. Don’t be a jerk! Meaning, don’t talk badly about people, show up on time, and smile once in a while.
  2. You can’t make everyone happy.
  3. Laugh at yourself.

What do you want people to remember about you after a shoot?

I hope that people remember me as open, honest, creative, and willing to work to get the job done.

What advice about modeling do you wish you had when you first started?

There’s no right or wrong. It’s all a matter of opinion.
