#MeToo ft. Merideth Morgan

headshot-color

No matter how you feel about the #MeToo movement, you definitely can’t miss it. It’s clear that the current climate has made it possible for people to come forward with what they consider shameful secrets, and place the shame where it rightfully belongs. But one also has to wonder if the more we hear about it, the more we become desensitized and consider it a norm, and then take it for granted that it’ll never change.

athletic-2

We are all feminists here, don’t get us wrong! Humanists, actually. We just hope the movement creates respect, not apathy. We’re so proud of our models who shared their stories for their bravery and support to the movement.

Check out our plus model/blogger new-sign, Merideth, who incorporated this into her blog recently. We loved it so much, we had to share – she touches on her experience and how it affects her day to day life, read about it here (click!).

Also check out the rest of her blog which touches on plus fashion, health, and more. We’re so happy to have the gorgeous (inside and out) Merideth on our boards!

1. Where you are from?IMG_3407.JPG
Los Angeles, California

2. What you are into… studies, hobbies, special skills etc..?
I’m a big fan of Sherlock Holmes and Tom Clancy novels..I was a gymnast as a young child and enjoyed playing many sports growing up, from swimming and tennis to varsity high school basketball. I was classically trained on the piano and vocals since I was 10 years old, and I actually fronted a touring indie rock band as a lead singer/keyboardist and songwriter/band manager from 15 into my early 20s. Music is still the magic that fuels my creative ethos.

3. Favorite clients from the biz?
Fave clients..Armani, Burberry, John Varvatos are a few of my all time favorite designers, and working for them is always an honor.. Trina

IMG_3412.JPG

Turk / Mr Turk are personal friends and I’ve modeled for their men’s collection for years, and actually love the pieces!

4. Dreams/goals any thing else of interest (any other dream clients?)?
I am a consummate dreamer…I’ve been enticed and empowered by many forms of creative expression, and my goals are as broad as they are bold. As an enthusiastic lover of fashion and a working model, a major goal is an international campaign for an elite designer like Dolce & Gabbana..which ironically was the brand that launched one of my career heroes David Gandy, who broke barriers in the field, which I also aspire to do. I also hope to return to the music industry as a performer and songwriter, in tandem with my expanding work as a model and actor.

5. Career highlights?JS28.jpeg
I’ve been blessed with a number of amazing experiences in multiple disciplines of the creative/media industries, from being the first male model to walk for Project Runway’s Michael Costello in Fashion Week, to leading a band performance in front of almost 10,000 people, to filming lead roles for Nicki Minaj, Uniqlo, the Discovery Channel, and more. Shadowing Kevin Spacey was also pretty rad.

6. How did you get into modeling or acting?
I was scouted into modeling by a talent agency that obtained a few promo images I had taken as a teenager while fronting my rock band..within a few weeks I was published in a regional magazine and booked a runway show, and the rest, as they say, is history…

Couples Who Create Together, Stay Together!

Check out the cool and talented couple, Valéry and Bryan, whose love for each other and love for creating has produced some wonderful, innovative content! Keep reading to learn more about their journey as partners!

How did you two meet? Did your craft bring you together?Valery_Lessard_EDIT_Andreanne_Gauhier_2.jpeg Acting class at Anthony Meindl Actor’s Workshop in NYC. We first met in 2012, and started dating and co-producing the following year.

What is it like to work with your significant other?
We found that we are a great balance. Bryan’s tedious preparation and Valéry’s creative instincts complement each other wonderfully. By being able to trust and rely on one another, it allows every project we work on to grow stronger, together.

What project are you most proud of?
We’ve completed two short films together. The first is UNDER WATER, and the second was soon after, called AFTER MIDNIGHT, which is a short tribute

BRYANFITZGERALD051611678R.jpgfilm to Linklater’s BEFORE… series (starring Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy) and how it brought us together. Watch AFTER MIDNIGHT at https://youtu.be/znT1oiYCSiU.

Do you collectively have a dream project?
UNDER WATER the feature film is our next big endeavor. It will be a full-length film based on the short we did. We’re currently distributing the script to competitions, labs, and agents, and seeking funding and co-production opportunities.

Our dream project is a love story based on Valéry’s grandparents, and about how love and war cannot coexist.

TALENT SPOTLIGHT: GILLIAN TODD

We’re so excited to feature Bicoastal MGMT model/talent, Gillian Todd, on our blog this month! We’ve loved having her over the years and watching her talents grow and spread into different paths like developing and producing film, starting her own company (theBlox), and more! Continue reading to learn more about Gillian…
GILLIAN_TODD_250.jpg
How long have you been with Bicoastal as a fit model, print model and actor?
I  am very happy to say I’ve been a part of the Bicoastal family for going on 6 years.
Tell us about your background?
I’m originally from Montana, where I studied acting & modern dance, before coming to New York to pursue a career in acting. I had a multitude of supplemental jobs when I first moved here- everything from teaching pre-school, to working events to running my own private chef business. I have always been creative and entrepreneurial and I think that’s one of the reasons I connected with Marco, my business partner and new fiancé! His background is in writing, directing, producing, but business as well. We actually started working together and creating more quickly than we developed our romantic relationship and that’s when I got more involved in producing, in addition to acting.
GILLIAN_0540 2.jpgHow did theBlox come about?
I joined Marco in the Bronx about 5 years ago, shortly after we began our  company, Round Seven, where we develop and produce film, TV and branded content. While we were working on a Bronx-based documentary, we started to see that our Borough is portrayed very negatively in the media and on Google. Being marketing and social media savvy, we joked that we should use our skills as content creators to blow up the internet with positive SEOs about the Bronx. The notion became a more serious conversation when we started to see our area changing. We decided now was the perfect time to use content to protect and elevate the identity of the Bronx. Here at theBLOX, we like to say: Brooklyn has Vice, Manhattan has everything, the Bronx needs theBLOX.
What, in a nutshell, is it?
TheBLOX is the only new-media platform in the Bronx. It is made up of a community of media professionals, committed to amplifying and Bronx-centric, entertaining content that celebrates culture and diversity. Stylistically, think Buzzfeed, Complex, Vice, Vox…
Where and how can people watch?
Our website is www.theblox.tv and we are on all social media platforms @thebloxtv. Please subscribe to our YouTube channel to get the latest videos!GILLIAN_TODD_381.jpg
Do you have any favorite episodes?
It’s hard to pick my favorite segments, because there really is something for everyone. Of course I have to shamelessly self promote my sports segment! Check out my recent videos highlighting NYCFC and Yankees. I am very excited about and think the Bicoastal family will appreciate a couple style-based segments we have coming up. One is with Men’s Style Blogger Dandy in the Bronx and the other with Designer and Influencer Jerome LaMaar, called Stylin’ Out.
What’s your future vision?
My vision for theBLOX is to continue to create opportunities for young, talented creators in the Bronx and to produce content that will be consumed by everyone. I really think we are on the path to compete with the new-media big boys… not naming names 😉

Model of the Month-Leah Heifferon!

We are thrilled to have pro fit model, Leah H, as our November Model of the Month!  From being one of our very first signs, to now being one of our top models, we are so happy to see how much she’s taken off and we’re so excited to see what future brings her! Read more to learn a bit about her story, and her “stroke of luck” for stumbling across the fit industry-talk about genetic lottery!

1. Where you are from?
I’m from Tucson, Arizona. A cruel place to raise such a pale person!

2. What you are into… studies, hobbies, special skills etc..?
I’m a big reader, having worked for many years in publishing before transitioning to fit lisahoulgrave_photography_0312_rtfmodeling full time. I’m also an avid cook, am obsessed with spin class, and love meeting up with friends all over my favorite borough, Brooklyn!

3. Favorite clients from the biz?
Ralph Lauren Collection is just as classy as you’d imagine, and Rag & Bone is just as cool. I’ve worked for Diane Von Furstenberg for over five years, so their fit room really feels like my home away from home. Another favorite client where I log a ton of hours is Tory Burch. Coincidentally, Diane Von Furstenberg and Tory Burch are the only two fashion designers on the Forbes list of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. I’m honored to work for such inspiring women!

4. Dreams/goals any thing else of interest?
I’m planning to take patternmaking classes at FIT this January just to nerd out a bit with my job. The best fit models are able to visualize the changes techs are making to the pattern as they’re fitting, and I want to go deeper into my understanding of their work so that I can be even more valuable to my clients.leah-retouched-hand

5. Career highlights?
I love getting to travel with clients: to Milan with Ralph Lauren and Hong Kong with DVF. What’s dreamier than that?

6. How did you get into modeling or acting?
I was looking for a way to supplement my publishing income when a friend recommend I try fit modeling. I’d never heard of a fit model, but went to an open call at an agency where they told me I have the perfect measurements and offered me a contract. It was an incredible stroke of luck!

MODEL OF THE MONTH- ADAM LUNDBERG

We are delighted to feature the awesome and talented Adam Lundberg as our September Model of the Month! Read below to learn more about him:

aw14_lookbook_haka_large_42

Songzio3.jpg1. Where you are from?
Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii.

2. What you are into… studies, hobbies, special skills etc..?
Surfing is my passion. I’ve set most of my goals around having a life that involves me surfing as much as possible. I have made sacrifices with my work demands being high (not complaining haha), I see it as building my future to having the things I want in life 🙂
3. Favorite clients from the biz?
A wise person told me that one of the most important things in business is to be able to maintain great relationships and trust with people. I’ve taken that advice with all clients and relationships I’ve built over my career and it’s worked so far. I really look for and find the good in people and situations and have found that to be helpful in creating and building on those relationships.
4. Dreams/goals any thing else of interest (any other dream clients?)?forward
Surfing every day and having my house back home in Hawaii, that’s my dream. When I get to that point there isn’t much beyond that I want in life. Traveling is fun, maybe go on a boat trip to the Maldives, check out Greece, visit all the little parts of the US that I haven’t been to yet, I want to see the northern lights, bioluminescent water at night… Yea that’s it really haha
5. Career highlights?
Shooting with David Sims, Bruce Weber, living in NYC and being in the hustle and actually surviving it all haha. I’ve watched a lot of friends and people I’ve met move or get spit out of NYC in a year or two or less and mostly because they can’t handle it. I’m very fortunate I stuck it out and was able to find my way to be successful and do well for myself. NYC is not easy to live in and become a part of. So to me, being able to call NYC one of my homes is probably one of the biggest highlights of my career.
6. How did you get into modeling or acting?
My dad and I made fun of Andrew Keegan’s character from a scene in that movie “10 Things I Hate About You” after standing in a pose with his hands on his hips turning his face camera left side-profile with a semi-serious face….
“You see what I did there?”
Girl pauses unsure… ‘Uhuh…?’
adam“That was underwear…. Alright! I’ll show you the bathing suit pose.” *goes back into the same exact position as before*
“You see the difference?”

What started out as a joke about the audacity and shameless character in the movie, has now become somewhat of a running internal joke between my father and I because I don’t think I am, and definitely try not to be, at all like that character in the movie.

To answer the question, I was discovered a few years after that that movie came out when I was in high school by a photographer from Italy 🙂

BICOASTAL x CHENOA MAXWELL

We were fortunate to meet this dynamic photographer, life coach, and TV personality when she was looking for models to test!
Motivator_Headshot.jpg
We are so happy we got to sit and chat with her, see our interview below!
BICOASTAL: How did you get into photography?
CHENOA: I’ve always been into photography-as a little girl my father was a photographer and I was always captivated by his work. My original goal was to be a cinematographer and then acting took off.  After being an actress, I realized I was not authentically fulfilled with it. NY had been a great hub for acting-it was really about the craft and being an actor, but when I went into film in LA the culture was so different. My intention was to be an actor, not a product… it took some of the joy out of it.  I realized what I wanted in my heart was to study photography.  I wanted a fresh start, so I moved to London and studied at St. Martin Central College of Art.
BICOASTAL: What inspires you in a model?
CHENOA: Obviously beauty. But a lot of models are really beautiful but they don’t have body confidence or body knowledge.  But when a women really knows her body and is confident and knows how to move that is inspiring.  It is really frustrating to work with models with no body awareness.  You have to know how it feels to shift from pose to pose-you need to know your self, and be confident and bring that to a shoot.
BICOASTAL: How do you feel about the plus model movement?
CHENOA: I think it is very important to show women of every size-it’s important for our culture.  Everyone has a bad angle and a good angle. You need to have a photographer who can focus on your good angle. We should celebrate women of all sizes-we are all beautiful.
BICOASTAL: You have great diversity in your work! Do you find inspiration every where?
CHENOA: My inspiration comes from people. I have a real interest in people. When I sit and watch them, I understand how I can make them feel great in front of my lens. Most people don’t really love themselves, they pretend that they do, but when you get below the mask, they don’t really.  I find that as I travel the world, and from culture to culture; I like to inspire them to see and feel their beauty, and bring it out, and make them comfortable being photographed.
There is a shift in society now; it’s powerful but also dangerous.  People have their own camera-they can take a selfie, use a filter, make the image they want. But when they walk out in the street, and have to really connect, or be a model, people are more timid I find then they used to be because they are not in control of their image.
Screen Shot 2016-08-25 at 11.08.59 AMBICOASTAL: You are no stranger to being in front of the camera-how does that shape who you are as a photographer? What advice would you give someone starting out with modeling or acting?
CHENOA: It gives me an edge-anything in life that you can talk from experience from helps the person in front of you feel more confident.  I understand what it is like to be the model-so I want to help people feel comfortable.  To me that is how you get the best image. Let’s get you feeling great about yourself!  As an actor, I wanted the director to direct me-I was wondering- “am I giving you what you want?”  It’s a collaboration.  You continue to help the person evolve-don’t leave them feeling bad or with their confidence shattered. I don’t ever want to do that to my models or subjects.  Everyone has an off day.
BICOASTAL: You are no stranger to being in front of the camera-how does that shape who you are as a photographer? What advice would you give someone starting out with modeling or acting?
CHENOA: With modeling, the advice I would give is make sure you have your self confidence and self love all the way up high.  If you are going to be your best self, and kill the game, you have to be self aware, sexy, present, mindful, and connected. If you don’t have that inside yourself you can’t project that.  You need to start with it-self love and self confidence. If you don’t have it you have to find it. That is why I teach classes-often beautiful women can be the most shattered because they are expected to be beautiful and perfect so one flaw (which is not really a flaw) can weigh more heavily.  Or people don’t take your feelings or negative self worth emotions seriously because you are perceived as perfect. You have to have self confidence and self love to counter that.
With acting, I always tell people to make sure this is what you want to do forever, and get your business game up. It is not personal, you are a product, get your business game up and hone in on that.
BICOASTAL: Tell me about Live Limitlessly?  What were the first steps to creating this?
CHENOA: Live limitlessly came from being on the O channel doing a show called Love in the City.  It came at a time when I was most challenged as an adult, trying to have a child for 3 years, in and out of surgeries, spending thousands of dollars, and my marriage was crumbling. And I had to show up every day doing a Docuseries about my life.  I felt sad and alone, and I didn’t have an opportunity to do anything but show up every day and do my job. When I finished I realized I had built up an immunity-I had to show up and activate, instead of really deal with my pain.  I had a really, really bad childhood… at 15 I tried to kill myself and it brought me to a 2 month program to determine what I needed.  I was paired with an incredible doctor who loved me like I had never been loved before and she helped ChenoaMaxwell_ThePhotographer.jpgme build my confidence, realize nothing was my fault, and I went from being suicidal to a star.  So I remembered those tools, like when things are bad, shut everything down, quiet the world, and get into your own personal power.  I call it dating yourself. When you take control of yourself and your life, and hone in on yourself, take a personal journey, you can transform.  I took 30 days to date myself-and within 2 weeks, people I would see just bumping into on the street would say “wow, what have you been doing!?” There was a physical difference.  If I could go from a suicidal teenager with an abusive home to a star, I believe anyone can do it-you have to live limitlessly. I posted a challenge on Instagram- asking who wanted to join me in my self love experience?  Over 3,000 people joined me from Germany to South Africa and I saw that people needed this.  I knew people needed it but I didn’t realize how many people needed it.  So now I want to focus on helping others; it is woman focused but it is a people project.  It grew organically-it just naturally developed.  I built myself with these fundamental tools that I know work; and it doesn’t take a lot of time to transform.  It is why I do these sessions.  People go to therapy for years and years, but this can work quickly.
BICOASTAL: How do bring love into your work and your every day life-and how has that awareness changed your life?
CHENOA: That’s a great question, I make sure I am surrounded by things I love. You have to cut the crap, cut the negativity, take away everything that takes away your power.  You have to be committed to love- love is a spiritual groove. If you want to be in the presence of your spiritual power-than you have to be that. Be love in every single aspect of your life. Give an argument love, it changes it.  Every way you can apply it, it changes your life.  I teach kids every month; as a young girl I was reminded to smile.  That smile is a piece of love, it attracts people, it changes your life.  Be a magnet of love, by being love in every single part of your life.  I was at the top of my game, with the best agent, competing with Halle Berry and I chose to walk away from that because it was not built on love.  And if someone does not love you in the way you need to be loved, you need to be able to walk away.  You have to chose what you need-and you have to know it.
